First of all, thanks to everyone how came out last night. WOW, you aren’t bored of us yet? Nooo nooo… don’t go. Darn it. I MEANT, that’s so awesome people are still coming by and trying our food. Huge props go out to Jeff C. and Christie H. who BOTH brought one group and then ANOTHER group to come to our covert kitchen operation. We heart you guys… we really do. Next side dish is on us (pssst- ALL our dishes come with side dishes… tee hee hee… okay, we’ll throw an extra taco, or something nice :p)
But anyway, for the next two days ALL EYES and focus (for us at least) on our Saturday Brunch-tacular (and on second thought, it’s more like a LUNCH-TACULAR but we’ll live with the Brunch-tacular since that’s what we called it in the first place… and we start at 11am… OOoooOOoOh). So hopefully we see you out this Saturday (or Sunday in NoHo). Click THIS link for more info suckas: http://bit.ly/aQiNL
And pardon if we F’ up, because that’s actually why we want to do this (not to F’ up your food silly… I mean just being slower than we want… but if you say something wrong to us… UH OH!!! LOL), to LEARN! Sounds kind of like a bad after-school special message, but that’s the truth. And on the topic of so-bad it’s good afterschool special videos… I’m bringing back an oldie (only 7 months old for us) but goodie video. I dun care if I’ve posted it before. I now have like 6 readers (“Hi” Uncle, Aunt, Cousin John, Lil Sis and Uncle Cleetus!), so I have to do my part to make sure to share with you my “unique” sense of humor…
Oh yeah… let’s hope this isn’t what happens on Saturday (whoa, that would be creepy if it did… ahhhh, it’ll be hilarious too now that I have this post to create.. IRONY ^_^):
See ya Saturday (or Sunday… or Tues instead of Weds before Thanksgiving ^_^),
That’s all I gotta say about yesterday’s service. Well that and “HOLY MOLY!”
It was the absolute BUSIEST food service we’ve had since the inception of our… and I’ll use it again… “covert culinary operation!”
Btw, I just wanted to take a moment to apologize if the food was coming out a little bit slowly and how we ran out. WOW, we just didn’t anticipate it. We even made MORE than usual to try to anticipate it, but you guys still surprised us. Goes to show you, don’t underestimate the power of the internet… that and great tastebuds wanting more (if we don’t say so ourselves ^_^).
Above are some pics from last night’s service. Check ‘em out on our Facebook Fan Page, and check out more including our fun R&D pics (Research & Development for the non-geeks out there) too. I talked to some of you last night about our idea, but wait and see kiddies. We’re going to actually offer opportunities to a select few of you to try some of these elusive dishes “R&D” dishes… FINALLY! I think we’re going to start in December. Keep on the look out.
Alrighty, I’m typing this up at 3.30a and I’m tired. I’ll leave you with this…
SUNDAY SERVICE: I would say this is one of our signature dishes, VN BRAISED COCONUT PORK (aka “thit kho”) served with sliced hard boiled eggs BOILED in the coconut stew (and it’s GOOD!)
We got lots more to tell ya… but I’ve gots little more energy left before i pass out and drool on my keyboard (from looking at all the food pics that are making me oh so hungry…. WHY didn’t I keep a stash of food from service??? ^_^)
It’s another day, and another day closer to our Wednesday night service! ^_^ Thanks again to Harold for a great post yesterday. It made us all verklempt (stupid spell checker, that’s Yiddish for being all choked up on emotion fool!) And thanks to you (not in a sarcastic way, I swear) now the entire internetS knows our gate code (#141 for the rest of the internets that hasn’t found it yet), so there’s no turning back.
WHY CAN’T YOU FIND US GOOGLE MAPS? WHHHYYYYYY??
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that we’re finding that people are getting lost when using Google Maps (doh!) It’s taking people like 2-3 miles west of where we actually are. NOW I know why people are getting lost (outside of the fact when n00bs drive up and then realize “oh my, it really IS an apartment building”) SO, one of our new patrons and best-est friends (we’ll get to be BFFFFFF’s soon.. I’m sure of it) figured out the trick to getting the right directions. I’ve already changed it on Yelp, but the correction is a SIMPLE space between the double ‘C’ on Mc Cormick:
11049 Mc Cormick #205 North Hollywood, CA 91601
It’s dumb, but that’s the way it is here in the Wild West of… North… Hollywood. Hmmmm, that doesn’t quite roll off one’s tongue very well, but that’s just the way we does it here… YESSIREE! ;)
ACH! Stop Wasting Time, WHAT are we eating on Wednesday already???
WHOA, slow down young padawan. In due time… in due time… and I guess the time is… now… I think. :)
You can already see the pics in the convenient slide show above in 2 exciting parts (because it’s THAT epic ^_^). Or if you want to make it easy and can’t tell at a glance, it’s VN BAKED GROUND GARLIC PORK (or NEM NUONG for the Vietnamese or BRODARD restaurant inclined).
“Why the two part riddle?” you MIGHT just ask me. Oh mom, you know how to make this so why do you kid with me so!
Well mom, since your senility is setting in (she’s actually quite coherent and present, so I will probably give me a good butt-kicking and no home cooked food next time I’m back in TX) we take-sies the meat-sies and puts in the fried egg roll wrapper…sies and we add it in for one crispy culinary adventure you guys will not soon forget (unless your food has that “special” ingredient like in Randall Park’s hilarious short… THE FOOD, which I’ll include below). And to top that off, we make this AWESOME-TACULAR special Vietnamese sauce that traditionally compliments the meat, and is also incredibly pain staking to make (but we promise it’s “conflict free”) but OOOOH delish. We likes to call it our YUM YUM SK SAUCE!
So what’s this we hear about expansion plans?
My answer to that can be summed up this clip (which I think I’ve used in a post before… but BLAH… who cares):
And if you’re still reading, you get the benefit of actually hearing (or in this case “reading”) the update. WELL, we’re still figuring things out and we ARE looking at taking over a downtown location. The ONLY thing with it is that we won’t be able to keep our current concept at this location, but it will be a variation… And it will still be JUST as tasty at the very least. And that’s not to say we won’t do our concept in other ways… we HAVE ideas! ^_^
Also, in the next day or two we’ll probably announce a SUPA DUPA SPECIALISTIC SATURDAY BIRTHDAY BRUNCH-TACULAR (my b-day’s on the 25th… WHOOPEE), but just surf Facebook or something until we make that announcement. M’kay?
Alrighty, for that ONE person that’s actually read through all of this, check out this HILARIOUS short film called THE FOOD. Not only does this make me laugh, but that “Asian looking guy”, Randall Park, makes me laughsies too (he’s AWESOME in THE PEOPLE I SLEPT WITH that yours truly happens to be involved in ^_^).
“How ‘bout some NOSE pizza?” That’s hilarious I tell ya… HILARIOUS!
But beware, this clip ain’t for the kiddies (unless they’re like 8 or something because they use ALL these profanities already… trust me!):
I think we’ll just end on that note (hopefully it was a funny note for you ^_^). See ya Wednesday!
As one of our regulars said at the mention of what we’re serving today… and we LIKE it! We also LOVE that we have like 16 five star reviews on Yelp now too! WOO HOO! If you haven’t written one, and feel so inclined… we’d love your help. Thanks ;)
Time: TONITES, 6-9p (or earlier if we run out… which is happening more often than not)
Side: say it slowly with me.. WASABI…MASHED.. ‘TATERS… and it’s friggin’ delish!!
Oh boy! If I haven’t ever told you, I’m kind of a curry connoisseur. Not that I know a lot about curry or can articulate the intricate ratios of the many complicated spices that make up curry… but I just LOVE curry in ANY form: Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Malaysian…. it’s all good to me.
THANKFULLY, Japanese Curry, if you haven’t had it, is the MOST PALATABLE of all the curry cousins. It’s a little bit sweet, a whole lot less pungent and we’re putting a little bit of kick tonight in terms of spice… but not so much to knock you completely on your a— suckas! ^_^
And oh BOY, if you haven’t had the Japanese hamburger we make for this, it is scrum-diddly-umptous! (thanks to Ned Flanders for that great expression) As you get to know us, you’ll find that we love many a thing… and that includes honey panko and eggs. And this patty’s got plenty of those to give it a mouth-watering flavor that will send you home in a euphoric state that you’ll want to kick up your feet and find you some FLAVOR-OF-LOVE on that there television set cause that sh-t’s hilarious.
But anyway, hope to see you tonight ‘cause it’s going to be GOOoooOOOoOOD and limited. Oh yeah, if you want some, just let us know early.
ALSO, NEW RULE: If you contact me during service (twitter, Facebook or phone), I cannot guarantee a response. We get slammed and I can’t be sitting on the internets while I’m serving foods to peoples. But if you get a response, AWESOME! But just come by anyway because we love your company. :)
Xoxo,
TEAM SK
PS - Above are our THAI STYLE CHICKEN WINGS. We love us some chicken wings, and are trying some out for public consumption in the near future as well! ^_^
WOW, it has been QUITE a while since we’ve had a full on blog post. Lots of posts of food we’ve eaten, explored and cooked… but not much content about anything else, huh?! Well, first off…
If you haven’t have this… O…M…F…G! It’s so juicy, tender and delicious! Every morsel… EVERY BITE of this stuff is to be cherished. Can’t you see the pic. It even glistens in the light because it’s oh so GOOD!
And if you’re just joining us (sounds like I’m writing for the radio now), our concept (I will seriously write a page fully explaining it and making fun of people who still need to de-program their brains) is VERY SIMPLE:
ONLY ONE MEAT AND ONE VEGGIE DISH SERVED THREE DIFFERENT WAYS (THAT YOU PICK): TACO, BURRITO OR A BANH MI STYLE SANDWICH
Now that I’ve got that off my chest… we’re BACK and in full swing with SERIOUS planning going towards some kind of expansion. Maybe we’ll find a bigger back yard, do a mobile supper club, peddle our wares at various farmers markets. We don’t know. We do know this, it’s been a lot of fun starting this, and we intend on growing it.
Oh yeah, if you couldn’t get enough of it… here’s the first picture EVER of our “dish du jour” above for our Wednesday (6-9p) service. HOORAY!
By the way, if you haven’t already, join our Facebook Fan Page for the latest updates and a HUGE assortment of pictures as well. We’d love to have ya! ;)
While this is shorter than I would like, this is us getting back into full swing. And by that, I mean we gotta end our post with a fun video. Have you ever seen GATCHAMAN (aka G-FORCE aka BATTLE OF THE PLANETS)? WHAT? You haven’t… well watch one of my FAVORITE opening songs for this show that aired in Japan in the ’70s (which was quite bloody and spectacular too), and in the US shortly after in a couple of iterations. Enjoy:
Pictured above, our side from yesterday: LIGHTLY CURRIED FRIED RICE w/ LEEKS + SHITAKE MUSHROOMS…
What does that mean? It mean’s it’s effin good! That’s what that means. :)
HAPPY MONDAY HUMANITY
Thanks to all of ya’ll (here comes my Texas roots right there… even though I don’t actually talk like that) that moseyed on over to our eating establishment (aka our back-patio apartment). We’re still meeting new people… and we LOVE that! Props to Rachelle and Sophie. Hot diggity damn you girls are REALLY on top of the current taco truck twitter crazy in LA. WOW! I wish I could have talked to you more. I heard you talking to another n00b, Gary, about all the different trucks. Caring is sharing… that’s what they say! ^_^
Stop your jibba jabba, what you servin’ Wed?
Answer: we’re not goin’ to tell you… until Wed at least (because it’s going to be new ^_^)
In short, we may be taking over this place pretty soon and we want to test ourselves out in the kitchen. So if you can make it, come on out. It’s good for ya.
We’re still working out logistics (i.e. the week hasn’t started yet), but this much I can tell you already. The dish for this Saturday: “NEW” LEMONGRASS CHICKEN. And by “NEW” I mean we’re going to try a new recipe. We’ve been serving this successfully since… April ‘09 (doesn’t quite roll off your tongue when you say it out loud), and we felt a new improvement could work and we’re bringing it out for all of YA’LL to try this Saturday. PLUS, it’s one of the most palatable dishes for a larger group (don’t worry foodie friends, it’s pretty tasty anyway… we promise or we wouldn’t be foodies too… and I realize that promise has no weight to it but just go with it for right now ^_^)
What about your tomfoolery in your “secret” kitchen in Noho?
Who’s asking all these questions? Where are you Chuck Norris… WHERE ARE YOU????
…
(ahem) That’s a good question… who EVER you are?!?!
Answer: UNTIL we open up a real… or MORE real establishment here in the valley/NoHo… the STARRY KITCHEN “test/secret/covert” kitchen STAYS! (and all 4 blog readers rejoiced with a quiet… yaaawwwn ^_^)
:p
I have a ton more to post for all 6 of you (I’m pretty sure since the beginning of this post I’ve acquired 3 more readers… I’m SURE of it!) including picks of one my FAVORITEST Korean BBQ places in EVER… PARK’S BBQ! Even the KITCHEN NINJA has never been there… until last night, and she was IMPRESSED… and I’m just FULL! ^_^ I’ll give you a quick summary though: HIGH QUALITY. I’ll write more later with pics too.
Until then, you either hate her, love her, deplore her, think’s she’s weird or… whatever… but here’s LADY GAGA’S BAD ROMANCE for your mental consumption (or deterioration). I have to admit, she’s a guilty pleasure of mine… and so much fun to sing at karaoke too. Don’t hate me ‘cause I’m a DORK (that’s who I am… I can’t helpS it) ^_^ Just watch it, even for a minute because frankly… it’s pretty f’in beautifully shot. Forget the music, it’s pretty cool to look at (and hopefully you sellout to like the music so we can karaoke this, JUST DANCE, PAPARAZZI and P-P-P-POKERFACE together ;p):
So today (6-9p) is a special crunchy treat for everyone! I would say this could be to celebrate our now EIGHTEEN 5-star Yelp Reviews (which is awesome)... but naw! It’s because this is what we came up with, and it really is too much fun for us ^_^
The Metro: Before I jump into it, really quick note. If you DIDN’T know, we’re actually REALLY close to the North Hollywood Metro stop (5-10 min walk). Click this link (because Tumblr’s not liking me trying to embed the map) for walking directions from the station if you’re planning on being a little green and coming by Metro: http://bit.ly/zqxwn
What we’re serving up tonight:
In the Meat corner: VIETNAMESE BAKED GROUND GARLIC PORK (aka “nem nuong”) w/ EACH dish served with crispy fried egg roll wrapper in every bite. Everything is also served w/ what we like to call our YUM YUM SK sauce that is traditionally served w/ Nem Nuong, and is painstakingly made up of slowly cooked glutinous rice, ground chicken and all sorts of Vietnamese flavors but so DARN GOOD with this. I don’t even know how to describe it anymore, but the best way I can is… “Drool” (that’s for you Joe and Natasha ^_^)
In the Veggie/Kosher: CRISPY KIMCHI RICE PATTIES (or as I like to call it, one of our our new “game changer” veggie dishes because it’s so crisp-ity crunch-ity that you don’t need meat!!!)
The Side: ALL dishes served with I THINK JAPANESE GARLIC NOODLES which are oh so garlicky + delicious. DOH, can’t find my pic. Oh well, you’re just going to have to believe me on this one. If you like garlic, Parmesan cheese and noodles… you’ll DEVOUR this. If this changes, I’ll update on Facebook/twitter.
And there you have it. Tonight’s going to be a tasty and fun night, ‘cause this sh-t is GOOD! ^_^ Hope to see you guys out, and as always LIMITED quantity (especially with our “game changer” ^_^).
If you think you’re going to show up later (closer to 8p or so), you can email, Facebook or Twitter your order BEFORE 6p (I can still operate on the buddy system right now if you wouldn’t believe it), and we’ll make sure to hold your food. After 6p, I just get crazed and will try to check everything as much as possible, but no guarantees unless you get a direct response from me. Thanks!
That goes out to all the n00bs (pronounced NEWBIES) that came out on Wednesday night. I mean, HOLY SCHNIKES (I can’t believe my spell checker doesn’t know how to spell “SCHNIKES”) it’s awesome to meet new people, make new friends, hopefully new fans ;) and just discuss FOOD! You heard me, M to the mutha F’in FOOD! ’Cause you know what? There’s some good sh-t out there and that wants to make me strip down to my skivvies (but my spell checker DOES know how to spell “skivvies”) and dream that I’m like Julie Andrews from The Sound of Music because, “the HILLS are alive with the sound of music…. ahhhhhh….. haaaaaaa”
In all seriousness (step aside Chuck Norris, it’s not your time to shine as a Magic: The Gathering card today), it’s awesome to meet other foodies. We love food, we love you, and we love to make people happy (unless you piss us off). Is that so much to ask in life??? And if it is, that F YOU cause you’re wrong and I’m right! mwahahahaha If any FOUR of you were offended by that (please cover your eyes mommy)…. HAHAHAHAHA thatza TOO bad… itza MY BLOG… notta yours! ^_^)
What are you serving this Sunday?
And the answer to that is the same answer I gave on the school yard when I was a kid:
“NUNYA….NUNYA BIZNESS!”
aka
“Thank you kind patron for your interest and inquiry. We would love to fulfill your request at this time, but unfortunately (for you) when we serve a new dish we don’t release that info until the day of our food service to keep your excitement at an optimal level. Thank you, come again!”
And if you didn’t figure it out, it’s going to be a new dish this Sunday. If you don’t remember the RULES:
Old Dish (aka one we’ve done before) - we tell ya once we figure out which one we’re doing
New Dish - SURPRISE! We tell you day of, and either you trust us.. or you don’t. And if you don’t, you know what I always say, “that means more for ME!”
Now if this post is coming off a little snarky, please don’t think it is. It’s just a lot of harmless sarcasm as told by this witless fool (moi) just wanting your attention for another 30 seconds to make me feel like an internet star and validated… and while I have this post going out at 9.15am it’s actually 3.30a at this time so I’m a little delirious. :)
On that delirious note, take a moment out of your boring work day as you ponder what you’re going to do tonight, what girl (or guy) you think you might hook up with (but you know you aren’t going to) and plan your weekend out (Sunday STARRY KITCHEN service 12-3p anyone??) to stop thinking and watch this video of how the classic Super Mario Bros game would be if… CHUCK NORRIS were the hero. It’s dumb, mindless, and full of guns, karate kicks, a chain saw and a flamethrower. Just what the doctor ordered for this special Friday post. Enjoy (Mom)
So tonight, we’re back (6-9p) and we’re bringing something old and something new:
Something old = KALBI/KOREAN SHORT-RIBS (aka “the meat”)
Something new = CRISPY KIMCHI RICE PATTIES (aka “the veggie”)
I tried these CRISPY KIMCHI critters last night, and OMFG… hot diggity dawg are they tasty! If there was anything that could convince many of our carnivorous patrons to switch to the “veggie” side, this could be it. These are DEFINITELY in limited quantity, so if you want some let us know or ROLL the dice and see if we still have ‘em when you get here. I can’t stop salivating like a dog in heat (yup, that’s the image I’m going with here) just thinking about the crunchy rice infused w/ eggs (yeah, EGGS), parm cheese (CHEEEEEESE) and kimchi topped with this awesome-tastic tangy sauce we just created for this. I just have to say “SHAM WOW!”
ALL dishes served with a side of yummy JAP CHAE (Korean glass noodles) We ALWAYS sell out of the KALBI, so if you want some show up early or pre-order (via twitter, email, facebook, phone or messenger pigeon).
WHOA… posts have come to an absolute HALT with the exception of all the food we’re eating… well, just in case you didn’t know, read below:
Service is back on tonight (6-9p). No more flaking and going off to Texas or a road trip to Nor Cal… oh NO! We’re definitely back, and ramping up for our next step.
Til then, we’re still serving TONIGHT and we’re putting more TLC into it too. We’ve got a homemade tomatillo sauce that we tried on Sunday that’s AWESOME a VERY refreshing compliment to the food.
AND for all you Vietnamese / Banh Mi lovers out there, we’ve got a homemade french creme spread to into your lucious and light bread for every bite! ^_^
Here’s the menu for today:
Meat: Vietnamese succulent & juicy baked ground pork marinated and spiced in a way that’s ohhhh soooo delish served w/ a crunchy surprise of a fried egg roll wrapper inside
Kosher/Veggie: Sesame Crusted Tofu served w/ a special sweet soy sauce
We hope to see you tonight. The KITCHEN NINJA’s put a lot of her heart and soul into tonight’s service (because she ♥ ‘s all of you).
Did we mention we now have ELEVEN 5-star reviews on Yelp?!?!? WOO HOO. Click the badge on the left so it can whisk you away to the far off land with unicorns, leprechauns and… positive reviews for us. :)
