“Thar she blows” kiddies - lemongrass chicken tacos w/ slightly crispied (which may not be a word, but it is now.. thank you) yellow corn tortillas. The sauces include everything in yesterday’s posting, and also included a new fan favorite (motivated PURELY from our neighbor Evan rambling on in his drunken state about how MUCH he loved this): the sweetly sour peanut sauce.

Considering that we’re laying down the law (click HERE for a reminder of what seems to be our most popular post thus far), we stuck to our word that we would not formally survey. BUT, in a very informal and un-scientific survey of selectively hearing what I wanted to, using GQ to manipulate the emotions of unsuspecting new customers (“awwww, he’s so cute”) AND ignoring any criticism (of which there was none “says I”)- we had a 100% SUCCESS RATE!!! WOO HOO Honestly, this seemed to be a grandslam, and that adoration, love and appreciation ain’t such a bad feeling. We’re more than happy to receive more accolades, so keep ‘em coming.

FYI - we actually even recorded some footage and will hopefully have an edited video of testimonials on YouTube for public consumption. That should be fun… I think. We’ll see. I want to put all sorts of cheesy fades and similar just to have fun with it.

A couple of quick shout-outs (w00t w00t):
First, to Anderson Le for being our front man all day and taking what I thought was “well tempered” direction and criticism in stride. Good on you chap…good on you!
Tim Kwok & Maya Lim, also for helping us out, taking orders and being our on-site guerilla food footage filmmaker. I can’t wait to see the footage to find out if there’s any good blackmail material! Mwahahahahaha
Minh & Khanh: SH-T, you guys have driven the FARTHEST to come try our food concept thus far (Orange County… WHOA). Was it worth it? I would like to think so, don’t you? (don’t answer that question unless you can answer in a haiku)
The other short list of peeps that helped before include: 1st wk - no one (“sniff sniff” - I promised myself before that I was never going to cry); 2nd wk - Mehul Patel and Shermin (who had one of my favorite weddings of all time!); 3rd wk - Mr. POTAK LAM (I’m hitting a creative wall right now, but keep on truckin’ Chinese Bostonian Cowboy!)
Of course, ALL of our faithful customers in IMPERIA (imagine that being said like a ganstA’)
ANNOUNCEMENT - we’re going to expand our “service” and serve from our apartment this Wed (June 10th) night from 6p - 9p (or earlier if we run out beforehand). The dish du jour this week will be a REPEAT. Here’s the flyer from a couple of weeks ago:

From Blog PicsTrust us, this one’s good enough to re-visit. ^_^

Hint for next weeks dish???

We’re not sure how people are responding to the FACT that we aren’t telling people ahead of time what we’re serving (but ain’t that part of the fun), but I believe “ignorance is bliss” and will assume you LOVE IT! Soooooo, I’m taking up the difficulty up a couple of notches, but I suspect bringing it down a LOT tomorrow because I don’t know if I can keep up the difficulty… and you might stone me next time you see me and I don’t like stones!!! ^_^

This hint has to do with our friend Eddie Gilbert, who we mentioned is on the new TV reality competish (for those in the industry, how do you like that “lingo” I’m using, it makes me sound COOL right?!?!?!), The Next Food Network Star. Thankfully he didn’t get voted off tonight, so we can continue rooting for him and using him as our semi-celeb friend who, as of this posting, has an unintentional hint burried in his blog FOODS4DUDES. That’s it chockos!

Alrighty suckas - play with that and we’ll post up some pics from the event and maybe some video tomorrow. Until then:

Here it is (or was), Japanese hamburger curry!!! Above is both our veggie and non-vegtacular (well it was!) version:

(on the left) with deep fried morsels of tofu w/ the smörgåsbord slow cooked stewed veggies in the curry. SEE, that ain’t even close to rabbit food, right?!?!

(on the right) that’s the hamburger dish du JOUR!!! It’s a mix of pork, beef, garlic and…LOVE! That’s the most important ingredient… well, next to the Japanese curry of course.

And here’s a quick thought on Japanese curry:

Ohhhhhhh Japanese curry… you are so much less potent, less pungent, less spicy and less everything else that many can’t take about curry. While most would be discouraged with the lessening of what makes all other versions of curry unique, oh NO! You decide to set yourself apart and make yourself the tasty-rrific and more “user friendly” version that you are today! (end scene)… kinda sounds like those hilarious Bud Light - “Real Men of Genius” Commercials, right? Here’s a good compilation of just a few of them (the audio’s out of sync, but who cares… let the hilarity ensue):

…

But I digress. Back to the topic at hand. THANKS for all that showed up today. It was a whirlwind in the beginning and… well, we kind of had to close shop early because we sold out. YEE HAW! A FIRST in the history of Starry Kitchen (all 3 weeks of our history that is LOL).

From this outing I will present this one question or observation to you guys:

How did you guys like the Japanese curry?

To tell you guys the truth, we were a little iffy (it’s actually a WORD now- here’s the definition as defined by Merriam-Webster) on this one dish, but that’s what trials are for, right? Gotta take some RISKS, and see what works out.

Curry, even if it’s Japanese, is still a strong spice and not for everyone. It is a great Asian comfort food though, and we definitely wanted to take a stab. And ultimately, this dish was actually more about the succulent morsels of mouthwatering goodness and it’s marriage of luscious flavor with the curry, and if you agree the meat even NEAR that then… MISSION ACCOMPLISHED; if you didn’t, tough luck! HA More for us and for others (but your opinion is duly noted, filed and sorted away with all the other TPS Reports ^_^).

Otherwise, here’s the hint for our next dish du jour… and a hint for the hint, I promise it’s not Peter. Take a look:

Peace out,

Dish du Jour: Vietnamese Lemongrass Chicken

From Blog Pics

Awwwwwww J’YEAH! It’s on like donkey kong ya’ll. For those of us that are night owls, early birds (i.e. waking up before 12noon on a Sunday) or complete insomniacs… you now know what it is that we’re serving. Good on you!

We tried almost 10 different chicken dishes this week (read a previous post about CHICKEN EXPLORATION WEEK), and it held it’s own and we’ve found some future chicken dishes in the process!

Lemongrass, as an ingredient, is one that’s very popular and has a special almost marriage-like relationship with Vietnamese food. I KNOW because my mom SMS texted me confirming I’m Vietnamese! That’s how cool my mom is: SMS texts, IM chats AND she knows all the lyrics to R. Kelly’s “rap opera” Magnum Opus, TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET (I DARE you to click the link for maximum hilarity). Oh yeah, she MIGHT have told me Snake Eyes from G.I.Joe is a real person and COULD be my father… REALLY! (well, at least some of this stuff about my Mom is real ^_^)

Back to the main topic: LEMONGRASS. Well, this grass don’t taste like crap combined with lemon either. Once you taste this “grass” sent from the gods themselves in our chicken recipe… if you’re an Irish Catholic from Boston (or Ireland) you’re going to say to yourself “Jesus, Mother, Mary and Joseph”, because it’s THAT over. Flavor enlightenment my friends. FLAVOR ENLIGHTENMENT

From Blog Pics

Alright, alright. You might be saying to yourself, “Team Starry Kitchen, are you smoking crack,” and I would reply, “Naw, but lemon grass is kinda like that once you have it. Hell, everything Starry Kitchen serves has addictive flavor properties that church goers, talent agents, pharmacists and drug lords (one in the same if you ask me LOL) alike can put aside their differences (and uzis) aside to share the common bond of… you guessed it, flavor enlightenment.” ^^

Seriously though (only serious paragraph of this post), it’s good stuff. We definitely don’t want to blow it out of proportion, but it is quite tasty and we invite you and your friends to come and at least try a sample.

We’re going to have at LEAST two different sauces we’ll be serving too. First is the mango+avocado salsa, and secondly there’s what I like to call the GS3 (Ginger Sesame Sake Sauce). We had the same sauces when we had our version of the kalbi tacos two weeks ago, and that was…B-O-M-B (that’s vernacular for “Cool” Mom)!

Before I forget, here are a couple of quick pics from Pure Luck, and one of my old favorites - Scoops (I was there for the first/last kimchi flavored ice cream… I would concur with that choice not to revisit that idea ^_^). Since it’s getting late, quick summary: food is good and these jack fruit meat substitutions are very good in texture and flavor. Who would have thunk it?!?!

Jack Fruit “Carnitas” taco, “Carnitas” burrito & Tom BBQ Pork Sandwich (made up of jack fruit of course):

So come one, come all and please spread the love, word and support us as we continue out into the new frontier of Asian Mexi-Mix adventures.

Btw, you can come along for the ride on Wednesday nights too. We’re going to be doing our first service this Wed, June 10th. Time TBD, but most likely 6p to like 8p/9p

Much love to you all,

“Thar she blows” kiddies - lemongrass chicken tacos w/ slightly crispied (which may not be a word, but it is now.. thank you) yellow corn tortillas. The sauces include everything in yesterday’s posting, and also included a new fan favorite (motivated PURELY from our neighbor Evan rambling on in his drunken state about how MUCH he loved this): the sweetly sour peanut sauce.
