Starry Kitchen

UPDATE: I was discussing this very topic of my problems with their bread with one of our n00bs of Weds (thanks James!), and he mentioned that:

 1. He doesn’t like the super duper chewy texture and never gets a sandwich when it’s like that
 2. The bread is COMPLETELY different when it’s fresh, and it’s crunchy too! ah HA - so it was my fault (for not knowing at least)

SO, while I already declared I would go back, now I DEFINITELY have to go back to get my “BREAD” on because that sounds infinitely better than the TMJ inducing loaf I got before! Can’t wait (for the crunchy bread, not the TMJ ^_^). So take THAT Norris! Point- Team SK!

11/11/09 (9:30a): Ahhhh… it seems EVERYONE that lives in West LA MUST know or have gone to BAY CITIES DELI in Santa Monica. If you ask anyone, it is definitely one of the staples and it’s taken me over a year since I first heard about it to finally try it.

Btw, I know this post is a little late, but I figure this was worthy of a full post rather than a short and concise one from my blackberry. Why? Because I care, and my fingers start cramping up after my multitude of emails, tweets and Facebook posts. I mean, have you seen me use a blackberry? I’m a speed demon on that keypad (bleep, bloop, blop, bloop, bleep, bleep, bleep <— that’s the sound in my head of expeditious typing and processing all the way from 1970 ^_^). But as usual, I digress.

THE GOOOOOOODMOOOOOOOOTHER

Let’s just cut to the chase shall we: I liked it a lot, but I didn’t love it like everyone else did. It could be a case of too much hype (god forbid that happens when people come to STARRY KITCHEN… I dread the day we don’t live up to the “hype”), how I built it up my head or what I envisioned a Godmother would be. I’ll be honest, I thought the Godmother was honestly the “Godmother” of all sandwiches, and would been an amazing amalgamation of meats, cheese and sauces all smacked in between two pieces of amazing bread to make an earth shatteringly tasty good time… but it wasn’t exactly that.

But “was it good?” HELL YEAH it was good. I won’t deny that by any means. I totally enjoyed it, but I think the expectation I had with a name like that and all the talk that I think I blew it up too much myself.

It’s a tastily simple sandwich, but as one person put it, “it’s the attention to detail that really matters” (thanks Neel for allowing me to steal that quote from you), and at Bay Cities that detail does show. It’s a perfect ratio of oil, mayo, capicola, cheese and bread. Very tasty, and not too heavy either.

Uh OH, ANOTHER bread rant

There is ONE thing, and I guess this is a re-occurring trend considering my previous post about Banh Mi My Tho: the BREAD! I think it’s very good, but after a while I felt like a street walker that’s given too many “you know what’s” (and by that, I mean giving out lots of flyers for the next Jonas Brothers/Hannah Montana concert extravaganza of course… which is very tiring work ^_^) because my jaw was exhausted! Whew! Now, the bread was very good overall, and I’d prefer this over a dry/dense bread too. But man oh man, I can’t eat this thing often. That’s one chewy son-of-a-gun, and it’s going to cause me to have TMJ and then I’ll be slurping meals the rest of my life! “NooooOOoooOooO!”

Other fave sandwiches

And here’s the thing too, I have to admit I’m biased as well. My FAVORITE sandwich place in LA is still LARCHMONT WINE & CHEESE. This place is also one of those “attention to detail” places, and their bread doesn’t make me feel like a working class lady of the night after a long day of…ummm… “handing out concert flyers.” I’m not saying you (mom) will like this better than Bay Cities, but try it out ‘cause it TOO is worth your time. It’s simply good stuff.

By the way, this doesn’t include my and EVERYONE’s favorite Jewish pastrami sandwich @ LANGERS, which is a different kinda category of sandwich that the KITCHEN NINJA still hasn’t tried yet either. We’ll get to that marbled goodness sometime soon on this blog, but if you haven’t tried it you better get to that mutha f-cker quickly ‘cause it’s definitely something you could write home, to your random 2nd cousin in Dijibouti or Sally Struthers about while she helps out children or failing internet dot.coms (because she’s super duper nice!)

But hey, if you want, come by, get some grub from SK tonight (6-9p) and let’s discuss. I’d love to hear any of your thoughts, and you know what: we love to eat, breath and discuss food… and that’s what we’re all about. :) Well that and Chuck Norris. Check out this hilarious discovery I found if you put ‘Google Chuck Norris’ and click the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button. (read it and let the hilarity ensue… now):

Before I sign off, and in irreverent honor of the fine Italian establishment that is Bay Cities (btw, no joke -I WILL definitely be going back), I dedicate this fine and respectful YouTube video that I feel truly embodies the Italian culture and language (and if that isn’t being laid on thick enough - please make note: SARCASM ALERT ^_^):

Which chicken will be the new hotness of this Sunday?

Above are FOUR chicken dishes and FOUR sauces. Of these FOUR chicken dishes, like Highlander, there can only be ONE.

If you want to inspect more closely, close ups off all the dishes and sauces are on our Facebook Fan Page. Just click the picture above if you don’t want to search the vast universe that is FB.

I can tell you that we’re going to use two - three of the sauces displayed here. Those make the flavors really pop. So much it makes me want to learn how to do that Souljaboy dance so I can do it in the kitchen. I of course didn’t know the existence of this dance until I saw this little kindegartner (and an old friend who’s a grown man) at my Indian friend’s wedding doing this while I was trying to catch up with the latest dance crazes learning the bhangra (which is quite fun, and I’m sure quite hilarious to see a Vietnamese-Texan doing this at a predominantly Indian wedding ^_^).

…

but again I digress. Enjoy this little tidbit of a hint, and please spread the word. We’re goin’ to bust this mutha out of strictly Sundays and prolly (yes, “prolly”) hittin’ up a weekday this upcoming week. Prolly Wednesday!

Until then, enjoy this follow up to the hint from yesterday, and I guess support Hulu (after you support us) which is providing episodes of the Family Guy for FREE online… which is friggin’ SWEET!!!

UPDATE: We’re STILL serving this Wednesday, July 1st from 6 - 9p, but instead of lemon grass chicken it’s going to be this new Chinese hamburger meat for our tacos, burritos and sandwiches that we’ll be serving too. I just tried ‘em and what can I say… she TOTALLY PWN’ED ‘EM!

What does this video above have to do with anything? Again, not a damn thing outside of just cheering you up! But, if it helps, it’s a hint for what we’re NOT serving this week… next week… or almost any week (until Thi proves me wrong). I do have a quick update for this Wednesday service though:

We will NOT be serving lemon grass chicken this Wednesday anymore.

So sorry for everyone that loves that dish. It’s because our Kitchen Ninja has recently been inspired by her newest creation that she thinks is, and I quote, “SOOOOOO FUCKING GOOD!” We will be serving lemon grass chicken the following Wednesday instead. Sorry everyone. That’s what happens in this ADD society of ours.

One moment it’s lemon grass chicken, and the next moment monstrous sized moths and 3-headed dragons from space come and invade our world because they have the STARRY KITCHEN munchies and DEMAND Chinese hamburgers upon reading our blog, and only a lone boy carrying an oyster shell housing some mini-Japanese women can help control this dangerous moth (who will eat all cashmere sweaters in his PATH) and a radioactive female (I REPEAT, F-E-M-A-L-E) prehistoric dinosaur with the power to emit radioactive fire once she eats our yummy Japanese Garlic Noodles can stop these fiendish and kinda selfish space monsters. (Pop Culture Reference for Dummies ——> Godzilla / Gojira)

Random video for your mental consumption while you wait for physical pan-asian taco consumption:

Enjoy! We’ll see you this Wednesday night from 6 - 9p!
