Starry Kitchen

So another Sunday, and another service has passed by. Thank you for the kind words from all our friends, patrons and thanks to all that were able to come by too. Your company and $5 per plate “donations” are always appreciated.

So we’ll be gone for a couple of weeks, but that doesn’t mean we/I won’t keep on blogging (as I’m sure some of you have already noticed). In a quick retrospect though, forever we will remember the Summer of ‘09 as the time that we founded STARRY KITCHEN regardless of what happens. With that said, we have NO INTENTION of letting this fall by the wayside by ANY MEANS! The KITCHEN NINJA is happy to have found her calling in life, and is determined not to work for the man NO MO’!

She is determined to serve creative concoctions from her wondrous imagination to make her, me and all of you salivate, marvel and make all of our mouths-water with a unified mission to share different foods that are pretty common to some us in a form that is common to all of us (except you Chuck Norris… damn you for getting my weaker minded friends to buy Solo Flex’s… NNOOOOOOOOORRRRIIS!)

So in the upcoming weeks we THINK the blog will serve provide more incite on what we’re eating (get ready ‘cause we eats a LOT everytime we’re back in Dallas), recap of some of the dishes we’ve served before, what we’re thinking about in general, new ideas, our plans (which COULD be somewhat “diabolical”, and to provide dialog with all six of you dedicated readers that are bored enough to visit our site (hey, where are you going now… i have a YouTube vid at the bottom…WHHHHHYYYY!?!?!). ^^ To think it was only three readers only a little while ago ^_^… okay, what am I kidding. I used three other computers to inflate my stats, so it might be less.. or maybe none at all. :p

Even though we plan on pushing this (whatever “this” maybe) since I’m just hard headed and have every intention to help my wife realize her calling in life, we’ll endeavor keep up this mutha sucka of a blog up so you can see what we are up to. Hey, it’s what she was meant to do on this Earth, and I like to eat and talk a lot so maybe that’s what I was meant to do too!

On that note, which heartless b-stard amongst us doesn’t like the NEVER ENDING STORY? You ALL love it! I KNEW it (or at least assume it ^^). And if you LOVE it just like us, then maybe you LOVE the theme song too. Well how about THIS nice surprise: that guy (yes, it was a guy and his name is… Limahl of course) is still alive and here’s a live version of the song. We hope this can be our theme song too ‘cause the train is leaving the station and nothing can stop us (except for the inevitable and foretold visit of Leprecauns in the ‘HOOD or from SPACE… damn those evil leprecauns!) Enjoy!

First of all, here’s a pic of our double surprise service today. The dish was a BAKED GROUND GARLIC CHICKEN (Vietnamese nem nuong style) served with fried rice. Surprise #1 was the crunchy fried egg roll wrapper in the taco for extra…CRUUUUNCH! That was a total “audible” (couldn’t find a great relevant definition, but it’s basically a last minute call right before the next play) like play from us. Boy does that add some fun in every bite for your mouth! #2 - we gave free dessert for every order today- the same FRIED MILK EGG ROLLS we showcased the other day from our personal experimentation. Kitchen Ninja Thi Tran couldn’t help herself after making it, that she just felt like she should share it. ^^ This could be a hint (wink wink, nudge nudge, slappity slap slap!) that we may venture in some desserts every now and then too.

Secondly, sorry for the craptacular blurry pics from Honey Pig in K-Town (LA) in the previous post to this one… so here are some SUPA clear pics. If you actually read our blog way back, this is where you get the cutesy pig lighters (pic below). We don’t do authentic grilled Korean BBQ ourselves at home… but we sure do enjoy EATING it ourselves somewhere else. ^^ If you like Korean BBQ, BBQ or are a red-blooded carnivorous American in general, this is a great place to go (when you’re not eating at STARRY KITCHEN of course). It’s clean, high quality, and you get free spicy fried rice w/ seaweed+lettuce made in the juices of EVERYTHING you’ve been cooking that night. Who doesn’t love that? (just shut your cake hole CHUCK NORRIS… SHUT IT!)

Lastly, this is all I’m writing tonight BUT…

TAIWANESE 3 CUP CHICKEN RETURNS this Wednesday (6-9p)

Never had it or dunno what it is? Click the convenient link on the dish itself. If not, just type in “3 cup” in the search and you’ll find more references. That’s still not enough for ya? Here’s it is in it’s purest and tastiest forms straight from our kitchen into that segment of your brain entitled APPETITE. We hope you and your brain enjoy this (Come Wednesday… you want to COOOOME AND EAT DELICIOUS FOOOOOD):

And yes, of course we have a video for ya… enjoy… “THE GOOGLING” (be scared… be very scared of…. GOOGLE MAPS!!! tee hee hee)

First, here are some pics from our LEMONGRASS CHICKEN + SPICY TOFU service from Wed night. Good stuff.

Secondly, service is ON this Sunday from 12-3p, BUT with a catch: it’s going to be our last service for a couple of weeks. In short, the realities of family beckons- Thi’s father in Dallas is going through major heart surgery next week and we’ll be flying back to the city of our roots to be with our family. We expect to be back, and will continue to blog and keep everyone updated via email, Twitter and Facebook.

Trust when we say it’s a hard for us (emotionally) to stop for a little while because frankly… we are LOVING doing this, we LOVE your reactions, we are very SERIOUS about growing this (did you see one of the previous posts… we ACTUALLY did go look at the taco trucks today!) and truthfully we’re SCARED of losing momentum. We’re not afraid to admit that either.

One of the things that we set out to do was be consistent. After hearing a couple of not-so-nice stories of businesses flaking, not communicating or similar we were committed to continually serve. That and we knew it was an uphill battle for people to take seriously a couple that serves tacos outta the back of their apartment… well, we’ve been doing it for about 3 months now. What do you think? ^_^ Well, I guess the LA Weekly Blog - Squid Ink thinks it’s interesting. LOL

SO, if you really want you some STARRY KITCHEN, come git it this weekend ‘cause it’s the last you’ll have… until we comeback! What are we serving…hmmm…what ARE we serving?

GROUND GARLIC CHICKEN (aka “nem nuong” made w/ chicken) - click the link for pics from the last time this was served (ummm, last week I think ^^)

Veggie: SWEET POTATO KIMCHI PANCAKE

There you have it. Want to know more… click the link. I’ll upload a great pic of the SWEET POTATO KIMCHI PANCAKE tomorrow. It’s REALLY a good stand alone dish, and will be a great taco too.

So, please come out like gangbusters ‘cause we’ll be (voluntarily) shut down in NoHo for the next couple of weeks. And please continue to help us spread the word. I just realized today that we have SEVEN Yelp Reviews now. I’m not even going to link it because we have a nice lil Yelp button on the left banner now. Take a look!

And for the video choice of the day that’s appropriate for our last service (it’s not entirely appropriate since we ARE we coming back) …. let me present to you one of the guiltiest pleasures from the 80’s… “THE FINAL COUNTDOWN” by Europe (it’s so good!):

Much love,

Alrighty, it’s not quite Sunday yet… but we gotz to eat, right? So, what the F do we have here ya’ll:

First, that may not look so appetizing ‘cause of the obviously aluminum take out tray cause MAYBE we like to eat left overs sometimes… waste not, want not the “Beav” tells me… or if you’re Asian like us, if you waste it you’re going to have live at home the rest of your life, study math for every breathing day of your life and be scolded for being so wasteful. Thankfully, we passed that test a long time ago and still carry on the Asian legacy of frugality (aka being CHEAPOS!). Where was I again? So in the scene where Optimus Prime fights the velociraptor… haha You know I’m just “joshin’ ya.” It’s BUMBLE BEE fighting the…

SOOO the first thing is a fav dish: pressed chicken from the Caioti Pizza Cafe in Studio City (4 stars on Yelp ya’ll at the time of this posting… so we ain’t so crazy sometimes ^^). This dish is normally only sold at dinner, but I had it for lunch today. They serve it a ton o’ veggies too including some very flavorful asparagus (a fav veggie amongst the STARRY KITCHEN… ummm… kitchen.

F*CK - I love it when restaurants make chicken with a flavored and cripsy skin… that’s what I’m talkin’ about. I actually make a French braised chicken dish where the result is the same by cooking the skin in bacon and bacon fat… I SH1T you not. When you bite into a crunchy morsel of savory (and Galic! haha) chicken combined with the flavor of bacon - it’s almost as if you don’t need a significant other in the world (ouch ouch ouch - stop hitting me because it hurts physically AND emotionally ^_^).

Did someone say…CHICKEN???

The last pics are crunch-licious SK FRIED MILK EGG ROLLS. Doesn’t sound appetizing?? Stop being a narrow minded “Debbie Downer” only because you’re coming home drunk from clubbing right now or you’re waking up from a nasty hangover and you woke up all alone like the sucka you are… (wah wah wah) quit your crying and listen up foo’! We gots to make the steamed/baked milk first with some sweet flavors that compliment milk unlike anyother. Then we lets it cool down like a mo’ fo’. Once we does that, we decided to wrap it up like an egg roll and let that bitch fry! (YEEEEEE HAW)

What you can’t see here and can probably only understand if you’ve had steamed/baked milk tarts or similar is that: the flavor of this dish is quite subtle, but VERY rewarding when done right. As with any food in general, but especially this, the texture of the milk inside combined with lightly sweet and milky taste is absolutely mind boggling. It’s pretty darn tasty. If Albert Einstein decided to take a break from coming up with the theory of relativity; jumped in a Macguyver like time machine made up of rubberbands, tape and Danielle Steele novels; and conveniently made it to our doorstep tonight for these tasty suckers: TRUST us- he would soon become that annoying friend that will never leave because you’re serving SK FRIED MILK EGG ROLLS and they’re so good and tasty that he’s addicted like a crackhead and just won’t leave you alone! Yup, that’s what these FRIED MILK EGGS do- they change the course of time (“TESSERACT!!!”). I KNOW! It is simply… AMAZING!

‘NUTHA REMINDER FOR OUR FRIENDLY n00bs

Alright folks: you got your video & you got some commentary ^_^… can’t wait to see ya’ll on Sunday (12-3p). If you didn’t see the tweet or Facebook update: we’re serving a Vietnamese GROUND GARLIC CHICKEN “nem nuong” style. Hard to explain, but it’s just easier to consume. For our veggie friends, we gots some ORANGE GINGER TOFU coming your way, and ALL the dishes come with SK FRIED RICE. w00t w00t!
