Starry Kitchen

Best Restaurant Site, Maximalist: Starry Kitchen - Page 1 - LA Life - Los Angeles - LA Weekly

WHAAAAAT? Did you read that above (I think it’s pretty cool if you ask me!)

Here is Team SK’s “conveniently taken last night at an E3 catering visual PICTURE reaction” to the winning of this seemingly prestigious (to my mom at least) award that should help us FINALLY earn that $10 Google Ads check I’ve been afightin’ for (I think I earned like a total of $.30 in two years LOL):

In other words… my non-sequitor and random ways LIVE ON thanks to the more-than-likely influence of recreational substances (that’s at least what I assume because what sane person reads our blog.. YOU, that’s who.. and thanks!) support from LA Weekly for this award. Thanks guys.. you may have opened up a proverbial interwebs “can o’ worms” (but thankfully it’s really only my mom that has to deal with this since she’s only reads this cause I tell her to.. I think ;D)

^_^

Oh yeah, if ya didn’t get lost in that celebration (you should- go get drunk NOW) Din-Dins is BACK ON tonight foo’s! Last SUPER limited chance for some NEBRASKA ANGUS JAPANESE CURRY deliciousness if you want some of dat. :D

Otherwise, I’m going to celebrate the winning of this award now by… GROCERY SHOPPING! HUZZAH!! haha (no really, I have to… but it IS fun.. sometimes :D)

Hey, we’re just like you.. we TOO take off for Memorial Day (aka we are unfortunately not open on Memorial Day)

Yup, we ain’t/isn’t/aren’t/can’t/too tired to/don’t wanna (because we gotta rest!) open on Memorial Day weekend. For those that have read a lot of recent stuff (aka mumbo jumbo) including the Jonathan Gold blurb on us (below *wink wink*)… yeah, you’re gonna have to wait til Thurs+Fri/6-9p dinner OR just sneak out and get some lunchie munchies w/ us M-F/11-3p.

(THIS is coming in on Tuesday.. that is if you know what THIS is ^_^)

Until then, here’s some reading for ya if you haven’t already skipped to all the other craziness on the blog (which I assume you have ^_^):

Here’s the short and sweet blurb from Jonathan Gold himself about Starry Kitchen in the LA Weekly (YES!)

No More Celestial Nights

Starry Kitchen, out of the backyard and into the food court

Since you’re here, why not read about my KFC Double Down exploits as published by the LA Times! LOL  Btw, the way he writes about here is pretty accurate, and I coincidentally was RIGHT in front of the writer himself. And I promise ya, I had NO idea who he was (nor did I care). I was just ready to try me some Double Down that day.:)

In the late afternoon of April 12, 32-year-old Nguyen Tran of North Hollywood stepped into the KFC at the corner of Witmer and West 6th streets near downtown Los Angeles.

And if you’re still bored waiting for the work week to begin again, here’s an awesome fried chicken commericial for your entertainment… and I mean, AWESOME!!

First, here are some pics from our LEMONGRASS CHICKEN + SPICY TOFU service from Wed night. Good stuff.

Secondly, service is ON this Sunday from 12-3p, BUT with a catch: it’s going to be our last service for a couple of weeks. In short, the realities of family beckons- Thi’s father in Dallas is going through major heart surgery next week and we’ll be flying back to the city of our roots to be with our family. We expect to be back, and will continue to blog and keep everyone updated via email, Twitter and Facebook.

Trust when we say it’s a hard for us (emotionally) to stop for a little while because frankly… we are LOVING doing this, we LOVE your reactions, we are very SERIOUS about growing this (did you see one of the previous posts… we ACTUALLY did go look at the taco trucks today!) and truthfully we’re SCARED of losing momentum. We’re not afraid to admit that either.

One of the things that we set out to do was be consistent. After hearing a couple of not-so-nice stories of businesses flaking, not communicating or similar we were committed to continually serve. That and we knew it was an uphill battle for people to take seriously a couple that serves tacos outta the back of their apartment… well, we’ve been doing it for about 3 months now. What do you think? ^_^ Well, I guess the LA Weekly Blog - Squid Ink thinks it’s interesting. LOL

SO, if you really want you some STARRY KITCHEN, come git it this weekend ‘cause it’s the last you’ll have… until we comeback! What are we serving…hmmm…what ARE we serving?

GROUND GARLIC CHICKEN (aka “nem nuong” made w/ chicken) - click the link for pics from the last time this was served (ummm, last week I think ^^)

+

Veggie: SWEET POTATO KIMCHI PANCAKE

There you have it. Want to know more… click the link. I’ll upload a great pic of the SWEET POTATO KIMCHI PANCAKE tomorrow. It’s REALLY a good stand alone dish, and will be a great taco too.

So, please come out like gangbusters ‘cause we’ll be (voluntarily) shut down in NoHo for the next couple of weeks. And please continue to help us spread the word. I just realized today that we have SEVEN Yelp Reviews now. I’m not even going to link it because we have a nice lil Yelp button on the left banner now. Take a look!

And for the video choice of the day that’s appropriate for our last service (it’s not entirely appropriate since we ARE we coming back) …. let me present to you one of the guiltiest pleasures from the 80’s… “THE FINAL COUNTDOWN” by Europe (it’s so good!):

Much love,

But if you’re perusing our lil website, check out this article about… the KITCHEN NINJA does her FIRST uninterrupted (by moi) interview. YAY!

"People who know their way around the Internet have been congregating on the Trans’ balcony twice a week, chowing down on a sort of global cuisine that wife and “Kitchen Ninja” Thi creates without the help of recipes: Chinese five-spice beef in yellow-corn tortillas; sweet potato–kimchi pancakes; curry mashed potatoes."

Paul’s more on my game than I am! This is my latest for the Weekly: a profile of Tumblr celebs Starry Kitchen. It’s very cool how they’re making it happen.

If you guys didn’t know already, we had a nice write up in the LA WEEKLY this week (WOO HOO).  Here’s the cover of the issue below if you can find one (it was sure hard as hell for us to find one ^_^).

This is the LA Weekly we're in!

NoHo’s been found and closed down :(, we’re delayed on SK DownTown (just mid-January for right now) and now our story is out… so what happens now?  We sure don’t know, but we’ll see! =)

(don’t worry, we picked up some catering and private events along the way though to keep this train a goin’ :p)

First, WOW… today’s been a fun and eventful day. We got some coverage on LA WEEKLY’s food blog, SQUID INK! YOWZA that’s cool! Check it out HERE. Fun stuff!

Secondly… many of you asked, therefore you shall receive. LEMONGRASS CHICKEN is returning (but don’t “call it a come back”) suckas! Now that we’ve update the design of the blog (did anyone notice that?!?!) w/ MORE info… I don’t think I’ll need to remind you guys as much the time, date and why we’re doing this. Unless your sole occupation was being a phone operator for one of the most famous Vietnamese men of all time, the one and only TOMMY VU! If that was your job, please look to the left banner, take a sharpie and please write the info down on the inside of your hand. OH YEAH, if you can bring those hot bikini babes straight from the 80’s too, that would be awesome!

Man I’m sleepy. Will write more tomorrow. Oh yeah, take a look at the pix above. Would you believe we have ALWAYS considered doing “bo luc lac” tacos too?!?! We wanted to wait ‘cause this sh-t is expensive fools! We’ll probably take a day to increase the “suggested donation” to compensate for the cost of this excellent piece of meat…. YUM YUM YUM YUM!!!!

Until tomorrow… did we ever mention that we like ABBA? NO… oh man it’s over. Here’s a video for you, appropriately titled for what we’re going to be needing soon. La-la-la “If I got me a wealthy man…” la-la-la “money money MONEY!” Damn I love me some ABBA… almost as much as I do food!
