Starry Kitchen

While I organize tomorrow’s dinner service, Saturday’s BIRTHDAY BRUNCH-TACULAR (I still don’t know what I’m going to do for my birthday outside of serving food… probably my good ol’ fall back of KARAOKE), Sunday’s lunch service and taking over this place downtown…. updates may be a little slow.
SO, thankfully in the blogging world of Tumblr (which I pretty cool) I subscribe to a ton of foodie blogs that make my mouth water and make me hungries… and THIS is really making me a hungry, hungry hippo…. AAHHHHHH!
That is it, and carry on.
Oh yeah, if you care, this Saturday we’ve locked in our MENU!
Meat: our “NEW” LEMONGRASS CHICKEN (“NEW” as in a new recipe)
Veggie: 5-SPICE POPCORN TOFU
Come one, come all and bring as MANY friends as possible too!  We need to test out this kitchen and being SLAMMED!  Plus it’s my birthday brunch, doesn’t that count for anything anyMORE! LOL
And don’t worry, it won’t be like HELL’S KITCHEN where there is a remote possibility the kitchen will be shut down… not if we have anything to do with it.  ARGH! (I don’t know why that prompts me to talk like a pirate, but it felt like the right thing to do ^_^)
Okay, back to work… but I’ll post detalis on our 1 YEAR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY dinner at PARK’S BBQ for those that have never been there… oh man it’s GOOD! :p
Xoxo,

BREAKING NEWS: Next week we are VEGETARIAN-friendly! WOO HOO

This image is just a tidbit, a morsel if you will, of additional info. If you can’t tell, they’re deep fried chunks of silky smooth tofu. It’s so silky smooth I wish I could make like pajamas outta this stuff… it ‘so nice! I love me some silky tofu!

This isn’t even why it’s veggie friendly, but rest assured that “rabbit food” ain’t the solution either. I promise- my old friend in college was a Vegan… so we knows a thing or two about veggie AND vegan friendly! And hey, we’re kinda no body right now so we at Starry Kitchen gotta shoot for the stars (“WHOOOOOSH”)

So, this next time out it’s going to be Japanese and Vegetarian.

In the mean time, don’t forget to become a Facebook Fan (‘Starry Kitchen’), follow us on Twitter (@starrykitchen) and check out our blog often. If you’re on tumblr, please follow us there too. And if you don’t know what tumblr is, check it out at tumblr.com. It’s a pretty sweet blog interface, very user-friendly and tumble-riffic!

And since I’m just playing with tumblr to understand it all, I’m going to play with this “Let people answer this” feature. And please do answer.

HOLY MOLY!

WOW, this is awesome.  Read this below.  And don’t JUST read it, but read how many people either “liked” it or “re-blogged” it.  I mean, this may not be impressive to anyone else but me, but I’m impressed because only my mom reads this blog (okay, and I read it like 5 times a day still to increase my stats - Google AdWords check, here I COME!)  But it is strange because it seems people ARE following because I’m hearing about our blog in the most random places like at The Gas Lite in Santa Monica last night. COOLZ!

But anyway, Harold, David and Raza were frickin’ AWESOME and our first wave (of MANY) Yelpers! that came by Sunday.  The great thing about yesterday was:

  1. This was our BEST service to date.  We’re growing. WOO HOO
  2. Harold + gang were just sample of things to come yesterday.  If I were a statistician, I would say that 100,000% of my customers were from Yelp!  But if I were to round down, it’s probably more like 80%. ^_^
  3. Harold just proved to me why I’m going to get the KITCHEN NINJA an iPhone. Nice pics dude!

Btw, we ALSO posted update pics on our Facebook page.  Check ‘em out here: http://facebook.com/starrykitchen

Thanks again Harold, and “stay classy!”

we-eat-la:

Starry Kitchen (www.starrykitchen.com)

Step 1: Drive to this North Hollywood apartment building during the appointed hours.

Step 2: Enter code “#141” at the door and get buzzed up to the courtyard.

Step 3: Order food from a friendly husband-wife foodie team preparing Vietnamese and Asian-inspired Mexicali fare out of their kitchen.

Sounds strange, doesn’t it?  I will have to admit, while taking the elevator up to the apartment with my two buddies, part of me thought that we would be the next victims of an international organ-harvesting crime ring.  I hear livers are the current bodypart-du-jour.  Dear criminals: my liver is saddled with tequila residue and will be of no use to you.  Thanks.

Instead of being greeted by malevolent ninjas with surgical scalpels, we were instead greeted by Thi and Nguyen, a super-friendly couple who started this venture out of their apartment after realizing Thi’s penchant for visualizing yummy asian-inspired recipes in her mind should be put to good use.  Well, consider this a good use.

Each day the couple serves a different dish.  I heard other days they have served Taiwanese 3 cup chicken, honey panko-crusted fried tofu balls, chicken meatloaf and hamburger curry Vietnamese rolls.  Today they were serving lemongrass chicken or tofu tacos, burritos and sandwiches.  We tried one of each.  The result was delicious - banh mi-themed vibrant flavor with a retention of wholesomeness.  It will be interesting to see if they can retain the homemade aura when and if they decide to scale up their offerings by opening an establishment Downtown.  With their inventive yet simple concepts, I have no doubt that they can pull it off.

Amazingly, none of Thi or Nguyen’s neighbors or landlord seem to mind them operating this venture in contravention to a variety of municipal codes.  Nguyen explained that none of them wanted to lose access to their food.  I don’t blame them.  - H. Lee

Starry Kitchen, 11049 McCormick Street, Suite 205, North Hollywood, CA 91601.  Buzz code #141.  Hours: Sunday from 12-3 pm and Wednesday from 6-9 pm.
